Another 20 tons of food for zoo animals in Ukraine

FOUR PAWS collaborates with Austrian Railways to support zoos in war zones

Zurich, May 2, 2022 – FOUR PAWS provides emergency relief to war-affected zoos in Ukraine. FOUR PAWS is sending an additional 20 tons of animal feed to Ukraine to prevent many animals from starving and to support staff staying in zoos. Austrian railways (ÖBB) will transport food to the Ukrainian border via Hungary as part of an unprecedented cooperation. The ÖBB train left Vienna on April 29 and will be on the road for a few more days. From the Ukrainian border, trucks will continue to reach the Kyiv zoo, which will eventually coordinate deliveries to six other zoos.

“Right now, there is a shortage of everything, food, medicine, even the number of healers is insufficient. Some zoos are no longer stocked. That’s why we’re doing everything we can to support war-affected zoos so that the staff left behind can continue to care for the animals. The animals did not choose to be in this war. They are vulnerable and their lives are valuable: we must protect them. We are very grateful to Austrian Railways (ÖBB) for their support in this emergency action,” says FOUR PAWS veterinarian Dr Amir Khalil, team leader responsible for preparing deliveries and coordinating shipping.

“We are happy to be able to support FOUR PAWS by transporting food for animals from Ukrainian zoos. Rail Cargo group is ready to help in any way. However, we assist with shipping and logistics services, which is what we do best. This way, donations – in this case food and hay bales for zoos in Ukraine – can reach their destination safely and reliably,” explains ÖBB spokesperson Bernd Winter.

The war in Ukraine is causing great suffering not only to millions of people, but also to pets, wild animals and those in zoos. They are greatly stressed by the sounds of explosions and fights. In March, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine contacted FOUR PAWS, asking for assistance in providing food to the affected zoos. FOUR PAWS is sending ten tons of pelleted feed and ten tons of dry hay to the Kyiv Zoo for animals such as elephants, primates, grazing animals and birds to relieve zoos during this difficult time. The zoo will store the food before redistribution to zoos in Kharkiv, Mykolayiv, Cherkassy, Odessa, Mena and XII Months Zoo.

At the beginning of April, FOUR PAWS sent about 20 tons of pelleted food and dry hay deliveries to the Kyiv zoo for animals.
